Sometimes I wander…
On this particular night, this was one of the last pictures I snapped while walking along the beach for a few hours to find the light house. I never got to the lighthouse and when I got home they were looking for me, but I did get this beautiful photo out of the experience. The first time I saw this yacht by the town beach, the waves were choppy and the sun had just set. Some time later, the sea had calmed and the ships lights dominated the field with only faint glows coming from the horizon. Again, I found myself without a tripod. So I set my camera bag in the sand, perched my camera on it and set a 30 second exposure.

Every once in a while, I try to do something different with my photography. This photo of a fly on a dried up bone is less in line with my more aesthetically pleasing images. Ironically, I took this photo in the same place as I taken countless beach scenes, sunsets, and bird photos… now back to my lab homework.

This photo holds a special nostalgia for me. I passed this truck many times as a child and it always struck me in some inexplicable way. Maybe it was the geometric sequence of the barrels or how the vines and barrels made the truck scream the song of some vintage good life, but all I remember is the need to get a photo of it, the need to record it the way I saw it and share that mental painting. That need led to me hanging out the window of my mom’s SUV yelling “go slower!!!” as I snapped this photo not long after holding a camera in my hands for the first time.

This photo of an antique handle on my poppy’s dresser won me my first publication at 16. This was back in the day when all I had was an eye for photos and a zoom lens. It’s all natural light coming in strongly from an open window to the right. I love the wear on the wood, the scratches, the cuts, the rubbed off lacquer…

In honor of the buckets of rain soaking campus today, I’m posting this photo of a rainstorm. I envisioned the shot without the flowers in the middle. I moved them out of the way and took some photos before this one, but I liked this one most and deleted all of the others, as is my compulsion. Such a tiny subject can affected composition so intensely.

I always fall into the habit of using the ground, a rock, or my bag as a makeshift tripod instead of actually bringing one with me like a sensible photographer… I actually despise using my tripod. I like to feel the camera and hold it at awkward angles and in unconventional places. I can’t do that with my tripod. When I use my tripod, the camera will never see what I see. This photo, of my feet at a roadside as cars passed, was taken with my camera resting on the ground. Originally, my entire body was in the shot. I like it better stripped to the bare essentials.
